Joseph Pilates

Hi! I'm Elizabeth Davidson, of BeHereBreathe Pilates. Welcome!
Like many people, I used to endure a variety of low-level aches, pains and stiffnesses arising from my desk job. Luckily for me, this began to change when I took up pilates ten years ago. This experience gives me both an insight into the challenges clients may face and a deep respect for the value of a regular pilates practice. I understand and appreciate its long-term benefits - at all stages of life. It is also hugely enjoyable and I get a real boost from every class I take. I resolved never to be far from a pilates class again, and the only way to guarantee that was to train as a teacher myself!
In 2025, I qualified as a mat pilates teacher with London Pilates Academy (LPA), a CIMPSA accredited level 3 pilates course, which provides a firm grounding in anatomy and physiology as well as professional pilates tuition.
As well as teaching private clients, in groups or individually, I am available for hire by studios/gyms, including for short-term cover work.
Looking ahead, I hope to continue developing my client base, and supporting others to enjoy the many benefits of pilates. I love to tailor classes to clients' needs, helping them make recognisable progress towards their goals as soon as possible.
Every individual is unique. I want all my clients to start exactly where they are, establishing a firm foundation first. My classes cater for clients of all ages and fitness levels. All they need is a mat...then simply BeHereBreathe and do Pilates!

ARE YOU A GYM/STUDIO?

All you need for mat-based pilates is a mat (which I can provide). The moves are easily modified and adapted to cater for each individual within the class. This allows everyone to strengthen and advance at their own pace, step by step and safely.
Each class is different but all classes are based on the pilates principles of Alignment, Breath, Concentration, Centring, Control, Precision and Flow.
Centring refers to the core abdominal muscles - our central "powerhouse" from where we stabilise and control our movements. Pilates works our core, engaging our deepest abdominal muscle - our transversus abdominis.
Pilates builds our strength, keeps us fit, improves our focus and helps us to stand, sit, walk, bend, run and move more easily. It's perfect for 20-somethings, those of us in middle age, and right up through the decades. It's great for desk-workers or people with sedentary jobs.
Where does pilates come from?
Pilates is a unique fitness programme named after its founder, Joseph Pilates. He initially developed it to help other internees on the Isle of Man, where he was held as a German national during the First World War. In 1926, he started a studio in New York with his wife Clara, sharing a building on 8th Avenue with the New York City Ballet. His methods became particularly popular among dancers due to their injury prevention, strengthening and rehabilitative qualities. Joseph Pilates, a sickly child who became a boxer and gymnast with an admirable physique, had a deep understanding of movement and the human body. He died in 1967, and his exercises continue to be practised far and wide by everyone from professional footballers to those who simply wish to build long-term strength and mobility.
